Zippo Can Do and You Can Too!

A Chain of Events Leading to Zippo Can Do

[Notes from  Nelson Otero and Lori Gingrich ]

A New Home

In the fall of 2006 Nelson Otero and Lori Gingrich received a phone call asking if they were interested in leasing the dormant Scion Farms of Croton, Ohio. Unfamiliar with the property they declined, but the phone call wore on they minds and so one Sunday morning they arranged for an appointment to view the facility. Nelson was skeptical at a first, but a tour of the heated, seventy-five stall facility, two indoor arenas, breeding lab, office, and lounge quickly warmed them to the property. After a meeting with the owners, Nelson and Lori knew this would be their new home.

Finding Candy, “Miss Potential To Do”

Earlier in the year at the Reichert Celebration, Nelson and Lori discovered a horse of exceptional ability. Nelson is the sale manager for the Reichert yearling sale and after the proceedings; JR sat down with Nelson and gave him a list of hip numbers that were still available. He offered him the opportunity to pick a few to take back home to sell. It was a rainy day and the pens were covered in mud. Lori was tasked with showing the horses while Nelson sat comfortably in the office. None caught her eye until the last one. When Candy was led into the pen, she would not lope. Lori was forced to chase after her through the mud in a new pair of boots. After two strides she knew she had found the one she was looking for. Nelson was called down and he protested Lori ruining her new boots. She replied, ‘to watch her lope I'll get them muddy!' Candy was sired by Zippo Can Do. They took her back with them.

Later that fall, when people came to look at Nelson's and Lori's yearlings they would bring the horses in from the pastures. Every time this happened, they liked Candy more and more. Afraid she was going to be sold and taken to a different farm Lori called a new client from Oklahoma and they bought her sight unseen over the phone. Dick and Heidi McNair of McNair Quarter horses from Claremore, Oklahoma are her new owners. Candy stayed with Lori and she had the privilege to train her which again sparked their interest in the stallion Zippo Can Do.

When Candy went back to the Reichert Celebration as a two year old there was a buzz about her because of her success at the Tom Powers Futurity. That gave Nelson and Lori the opportunity to meet Karen Lawrence, owner of Zippo Can Do. As you can see from their ads, “Candy”, Miss Potential To Do has had a great show year.

Zippo Can Do comes to Ohio

After meeting Karen Lawrence, Nelson and Lori did more research on the World Champion sire Zippo Can Do. Karen had mentioned selling Can Do and due to many of life's changes Karen said it was very possible. Since arriving at Scion Farms with its superb breeding facilities Nelson and Lori had a few opportunities to stand other stallions but had always declined. However they found there is something different about Can Do. Purchasing him was an opportunity they could not let slip by. A plan was laid out for Can Do along with a yearling, which is a full sister to Candy, to be shipped to Scion Farm during the Quarter Horse Congress. Seeing both horses confirmed their belief in Can Do's ability. The truly special horses are recognizable just by seeing them.

Nelson and Lori are looking forward to the 2009 breeding season. They promise to continue on with what the fine heritage the Lawrence's started.
